Small Business Ideas – Tutoring

If you’re a knowledgeable businessperson, try using your small business ideas to share your experience and education with others.

*Are you handy with computers?
*Do you think in terms of numbers and analytical math?
*Perhaps you’re fluent in another language?

Then consider tutoring.

About.com recently described tutoring as a great opportunity in an article entitled “10 Legitimate Business You Can Start for Under $20.”

The article points out “the growing dissatisfaction with our education system and the huge growth in homeschooling.”

Because of those two factors, “there’s an unprecedented need for tutors these days for kids of all ages—even adults!”

The discipline in which you were trained doesn’t particularly matter. Chances are that someone is looking to learn it.

As About.com says, “don’t be concerned if your topic is highly specialized—even those are in demand.”

If you’re good with both math and English, consider brushing up on your SAT knowledge and offering SAT prep.

Knowledge of the subject is the most important factor. This is no surprise. And, most likely, you have that knowledge as a successful businessperson.

Take some SAT prep books out the library. Talk to your local Kaplan study center. Once you understand the test, you’re ready to help students master the material.

If you’re a working professional with knowledge of other standardized tests, you can branch out into those subjects, as well. Students would be eager to interact with a successful professional in the field in which they aspire to work.

For example, if you’re a lawyer, consider offering services as an LSAT prep consultant.

Likewise, if you have your MBA, consider offering services as a GMAT prep consultant.

When you have your first few clients, how much should you charge them?

That depends on your level of expertise and the situation of your client. Typical rates for tutoring sessions generally range from $10 per hour to $40 per hour.

When you launch your small business ideas, on what items should you spend your $20?

First, spend $14 to purchase a box of business cards. Make sure they look professional. They should probably be either inkjet business cards or clean-edge laser business cards.

You want them to adequately reflect the image of your small business.

Second, spend $6 on your advertising and marketing. This will most likely include flyers, posters, and ads in your local newspapers.

Your small business ideas involve tutoring. So reach out to local educational groups.

Contact private schools, public schools, and homeschool groups. Those institutions will know what students are struggling and could use some extra support. They can then pass your contact information on to the parents of those students.

Try contacting community centers and organizations that involve youth services. Many community groups provide childcare and academic support to students. They might be interested in hiring you to work with students for a few hours each week.
